Cadenza transforms the former Flora Theatre in Delft into a public interior where the urbanity of the city is drawn into the building. Delft is not copied literally, but abstracted through its spatial qualities: rhythm, depth, thresholds, façades and passages. These elements are translated into a timber framework that inhabits the existing hall and gives the interior the character of a small city.
A central street runs along the axis of the building. It connects the programme, but also becomes a stage where movement, gathering and performance overlap. In this way, the boundary between audience and performer is softened: the inhabitants of Delft become both spectators and actors within the same spatial sequence.
The timber structure follows a clear grid, occasionally broken to mark passages, thresholds and moments of spatial tension. These deviations make the new layer legible within the existing theatre, while allowing the urbanity of Delft to appear as an interior condition.
